Chief Engineer - Embedded Systems and Software

Job Responsibilities:

 

Responsible for the development, implementation and performance of the project plan relative to product, cost and schedule goals.  Manage technical and administrative activities of a sizable group of engineers involved in systems and software development.  Provide judgment in evaluation, adaptation or modification of standard techniques.  Provide input to all product/project goals, independent leadership and direction; manage outside contracts and consultants.  Make individual contributions to engineering and design issues when experience, capability or need requires it. This position reports to a Director of Engineering.  Reporting to this position may be multiple positions such as Group Leaders, Technical Leads, Systems Engineers, and Embedded Software Engineers.

 

  • Product and Technology Champion - Champion and lead the development of new products.  Approve technical solutions for product.  Study competitive products and new, emerging technologies, making recommendations for how to upgrade, improve and evolve both product and process.  Identify customer application issues and propose solutions to improve those issues.  Conduct product reviews to ensure that a competitive and innovative product is released for production.
  • Project Planning, Supervision and Technical Review - Monitor and ensure that integrity of design be maintained through use of sound engineering practice, conformance to product goals, specifications, company and industry standards.  Ensure engineering deliverables are completed to meet project timelines.  Review test results and hazard assessments to ensure system designs comply to company and industry standards or guidelines.  Approve product for going into production.
  • Leadership and Communication - Build the engineering team to support projects by developing both individuals and processes.  Ensure all assigned engineering personnel are working to meet all product, cost and schedule objectives.  Provide leadership while collaborating with other department managers.  Coordinate efforts among the various engineering groups to resolve design direction, task priority and resource utilization issues. Develop and communicate credible project, department and performance information as required to various levels of company management.  This may involve written and/or oral presentations.
  • Employee Development - Conduct Talent Development discussion sessions, rating performance, establish/track goals, and assist in the completion of annual wage reviews.  Responsible for coaching, motivating, mentoring, and developing direct reports to successfully take on additional responsibilities.

Remote Work: Crown offers hybrid remote work for this position. A reasonable commute is necessary since mostly onsite work is required. Relocation assistance is available.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 16 years of engineering experience in product development environment 
  • Minimum of 8 years specializing in safety-critical embedded systems
  • Good written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to frequently travel with overnight stays (6-20%)
  • Reliable transportation to travel locally between company locations during scheduled workday

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Working knowledge of product series in lift truck design, industrial design and ergonomics
  • Proven track record of leading, coaching and mentoring development teams
  • Experience with defining embedded systems architectures
  • Experience with firmware development and real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS, C, C++)
  • Experience with model-based software development using Matlab/Simulink tools
  • Familiarity with agile software development methodologies
  • Familiarity with relevant standards ISO, ANSI, UL
  • Familiarity with software testing methodologies and environments (MIL, HIL, Unit, Integration, Systems)
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (CAN, Serial and Ethernet)
